Somewhere in a tea bag co-packer's spec sheet sits a single number: a machine that runs at roughly 1,000 bags an hour. It looks like the kind of fact you could plug straight into a launch plan, but on its own it answers almost none of the questions a buyer actually has. What it is useful for is translating an order size into a rough production window, and understanding why that window does not shrink or grow the way most people first assume.
What the hourly figure actually describes
A stated capacity like "roughly 1,000 bags an hour" describes the string-and-tag machine converting loose blend into finished bags, each with its paper tag and each wrapped in an individual outer envelope, under ordinary running conditions. It is not a promise of a fixed speed for every product, and it says nothing about price. Treat it the way you would treat any equipment spec: a planning reference to build a rough schedule around, then confirm against your specific blend and format.
From an hourly rate to a batch duration
The arithmetic is simple once you accept it is approximate. An order of a few thousand bags, divided by a rate of around 1,000 an hour, comes out to a running time measured in single-digit hours, not days. That figure covers only the machine actually packing bags; it excludes the time spent loading and calibrating the line to your blend and grammage, drawing and checking initial samples, and any changeover from whatever ran before you. A useful internal estimate adds a margin on top of the pure division sum rather than treating the divided number as the whole answer.
Why a bigger order isn't proportionally faster to start
This is the part buyers most often get wrong. Setup steps, loading the blend, setting the machine to your target grammage, confirming the envelope and tag are seating correctly, checking the first bags against spec, take roughly the same amount of time whether the run behind them is 2,000 bags or 20,000. Because that fixed block does not scale with volume, a larger order spreads it over more units and looks proportionally more efficient once running, while a very small order can spend a surprising share of its total time in setup rather than production. This is a reason batch size matters for scheduling; it is a separate question from price.
