What Is a Hydrosol — and Is It the Same as "Floral Water"?
A hydrosol (hydrolat) is the aqueous co-product of steam distillation of plant material; it leaves the still as a stream separate from the essential oil. It contains water-soluble volatile constituents and a very small dispersed fraction of essential oil. "Floral water" is a commercial name that warrants caution: some products are not true distillates but reconstituted blends of water plus essential oil, solubilizer and preservative. For a formulator this distinction is critical for both labeling and performance; in INCI a true hydrosol usually appears as "...Flower Water" or "...Leaf Water".
Replacing the Whole Water Phase With Hydrosol
The most common mistake is to swap part of the formula's water for hydrosol and consider the job done. The right approach is to design the hydrosol as a functional part of the water phase:
- The hydrosol can be 20–100% of the water phase; but its own pH and conductivity affect emulsion balance.
- Hydrosols are typically acidic (roughly pH 3.0–5.5; it varies by plant). This can be skin-compatible but influences your choice of emulsifier and carbomer — some gelling agents lose viscosity at low pH.
- Plan buffering and neutralization needs at the start of the formula; don't "patch" them later.
Microbial Risk: The Most Common Error
Although a hydrosol is a "pure water distillate," it is not self-preserving. It contains nutrients (organic constituents), and a neutral-to-acidic aqueous medium is hospitable to bacteria, mold and yeast. Unpreserved hydrosol spoils quickly at room temperature. Formulation rules:
- Every aqueous/emulsion product containing hydrosol requires a complete preservative system (broad spectrum: bacteria + mold/yeast).
- The preservative's working pH range must be compatible with the hydrosol's acidic pH.
- Good microbiological hygiene of equipment and filling line is essential; starting with a low bioburden reduces strain on the preservative system.
- Prove the system's adequacy in the finished product with a preservative challenge test (e.g. ISO 11930).
Trusting the hydrosol's natural/clean image to cut back on preservation is one of the riskiest decisions in cosmetics.
